FLUORIDE TREATMENT: DO YOU NEED ONE?

In the past decade, there has been a noticeable decrease in fluoride consumption among the majority of individuals. This trend is concerning because fluoride has a proven track record of effectively reducing tooth decay and promoting optimal dental health. With the prevalent use of bottled water, many children and adults are falling short of the recommended fluoride intake. While dental needs vary based on factors like age, tooth sensitivity, medical conditions, and cavity risk, there are multiple approaches to ensuring adequate fluoride exposure.

Fluoride can be administered in the form of foam, varnish, or mouthwash. Topical fluoride is particularly beneficial for children in the early stages of dental development, contributing to the future strength of enamel. Individuals experiencing dry mouth due to medication for conditions such as anxiety, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, or high cholesterol are advised to use a daily fluoride rinse and undergo varnish treatments.

For those undergoing or having undergone cancer treatment, dental health may be impacted. In such cases, fluoride varnish treatments are recommended before, during, and after chemotherapy. Preventing oral infections during cancer treatment is crucial, and taking proactive measures, such as fluoride treatments, is essential.
