Microneedling

Microneedling Boca Raton FL

The wound response in human skin is amazing. Once blood platelets initially stop the bleeding, the body then produces new collagen and elastin, along with new skin cells, to repair the damaged skin.

What is Microneedling?

That’s the idea behind microneedling, to create hundreds of microscopic wounds that trick the body into building new collagen and elastin to “heal” the wounds.

Automated micro-needling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of the appearance of fine lines, acne scars and the improvement of the skin’s texture, tone, and color. During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to aid in the production of collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process also results in a thicker epidermis with a softer appearance of wrinkles. At Sindledecker Dentistry, we can add platelet-rich plasma to microneedling which improves your skin even more.

Collagen on the decline

Before & After Microneedling

People wonder why our skin sags and develops wrinkles and creases as we age. The sagging is a combination of declining collagen production and sun and environmental damage.

Collagen is a protein in our bodies that is responsible for providing the underlying structural support for our skin. The problem is that every year after we celebrate our 20th birthday our body produces an additional one percent less collagen. By the time we’re 50, we are producing 30 percent less collagen than in our youth. That’s why our skin begins to sag and is prone to wrinkling.

The goal is to get the body to build new supplies of collagen, and that’s what we do with microneedling.

am I a candidate for microneedling?

There are no limitations with microneedling. Just about anyone would benefit from its skin-improving process. You can have microneedling regardless of your skin color or skin type, as well.

What can microneedling improve on my skin?

One nice thing about microneedling, as compared to various laser resurfacing procedures, is that it doesn’t cause hyperpigmentation, so it can be used on all skin types and tones. At Sindledecker Dentistry, we perform microneedling most often on the face, neck, and décolletage. These are skin problems microneedling can improve:

  • Fine Lines
  • Uneven Texture
  • Stretch Marks
  • Acne Scars
  • Large Pores

How does microneedling work?

At Sindledecker Dentistry, we use the Rejuvapen for our microneedling. It features nine tiny needles that move up and down as the pen is moved across the treatment areas. These needles penetrate the epidermis to a selected depth of up to 2mm. This extends down into the top of the dermis layer of the skin, where collagen is produced. When Dr. Sindledecker moves the Rejuvapen across your skin, it creates hundreds of microscopic punctures/channels down into the dermis. Because the microscopic punctures are surrounded by untouched skin, they begin to heal almost immediately. But the body perceives these as wounds and it initiates the wound-healing process — producing new supplies of collagen, elastin, and new skin cells. These are meant to repair the wounds, but in microneedling, the wounds are basically fully healed in just a few hours, so the collagen and elastin simply improves the skin texture and firmness. These are the tenets of younger-looking skin.

microneedling results

After your session, your skin will look as if you have a mild sunburn. There will be some redness and flushing. How much of this you will have depends upon the number of passes we made over your treatment areas and the depth of the microneedle penetration. This flushing and redness usually is gone by the next day, so it’s a good idea to have microneedling done after work. Your skin will feel tight and you may have some slight swelling, but this passes after a day or two. There is no recovery time or need to restrict any activities.

How often should I have microneedling?

Since your body builds new collagen, elastin, and skin cells, you need to give it time to get down to business. Our patients like to schedule microneedling in a series of 3-6 treatments. This provides great skin firming and improved texture. These treatments should be spaced about every 4-6 weeks, as this is about the duration of the increase in collagen and elastin.

Are there risks with microneedling?

This is a very safe procedure. The skin punctures are so small they are mostly healed in just a few hours, so there isn’t much of a risk for infection. There isn’t any recovery involved.
