ORAL HEALTH CONCERNS FOR INFANTS

It is a common misconception that infants don’t require dental care since their teeth typically emerge around six to eight months of age. However, the actions you take as a parent during this stage can contribute to your baby’s good oral health and establish healthy dental habits for the future.

Ensuring proper oral hygiene for your infant is a straightforward process that can become part of your daily routine. Learn more about promoting good dental health for your baby with the following tips:

Caring for Baby’s Oral Hygiene

Dental Hygiene for Birth to Six Months: Cleaning your infant’s gums is essential before teeth emerge. Hold your baby and use a clean, moistened washcloth wrapped around your index finger to gently massage their gums.

Dental Hygiene for Six to 12 Months: Once teeth begin to appear, transition to a soft, children’s toothbrush for cleaning. Recent research suggests that fluoride toothpaste is safe and recommended for use after your baby’s first tooth arrives. Brush your baby’s teeth gently after each feeding, in the morning, and before bedtime.

Establish Good Bedtime Habits: Protect your infant from tooth decay by avoiding the practice of putting them to bed with a bottle. Instead, use other soothing bedtime activities like rocking and lullabies to help your baby fall asleep.

Note about Dental Decay: Dental decay is transmissible, so refrain from testing the temperature of your baby’s bottle, sippy cup, or pacifier by placing it in your mouth. Additionally, avoid sharing utensils with your baby.
