CHOOSING THE DENTAL FILLING OPTION THAT’S BEST FOR YOU

Did you know that the range of dental fillings is as diverse as the flavors of ice cream? Well, perhaps that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but when you find yourself at the dentist with a cavity, there are numerous filling options to consider. Most of us simply recline in the chair, open wide, and let the dentist perform their dental magic. However, have you ever paused to reflect on the materials your dentist is using to restore your decayed or damaged tooth?

Varieties of Dental Fillings

There are essentially five types of dental filling materials, with the choice depending on factors like the extent of decay, material costs, and your dental insurance coverage.

  1. Dental Amalgam (Silver Fillings): This classic filling material has been a go-to for over 150 years. It’s robust, durable, and cost-effective compared to other options.
  2. Composite Fillings (White Fillings): Recognized for their aesthetic appeal as they match the color of your natural teeth, composite fillings blend resin and plastic. Although visually pleasing, they may be less durable than silver fillings.
  3. Ceramic Fillings: Known for their durability and visual appeal, ceramic fillings, made from porcelain, boast resistance to staining. However, they come at a higher cost.
  4. Glass Ionomers: Typically employed for children with developing teeth, these fillings, composed of glass and acrylic, have a shorter lifespan (under five years). One advantage is their fluoride release, which helps protect developing teeth from decay.
  5. Gold Fillings: While not a common choice unless you’re a rock or movie star, gold fillings are durable, corrosion-resistant, and can endure for over 15 years. However, they entail multiple dental visits and come with a hefty price tag.
