What is Needed for Invisalign to be Successful?

For many years, there was a striking number of people who wanted to have straighter teeth but couldn’t accept the way to get there. Treatment with clear braces was a pipe-dream for a long time; but, eventually, such as system was developed using transparent wires and brackets. Seeing how far we’ve come from that point of development makes us excited. We love helping our patients feel better about their smiles, and are proud to be able to do so with Invisalign, the aligner method that has everyone talking.
Invisalign has become one of the leading treatments for correcting mild to moderate misalignment. We know what it can do, and so do patients. What some patients don’t realize, however, is just what is involved in the treatment protocol that will lead them to their best smile. Here, we want to point out some important particulars:
- Aligners are removable, but you must wear them. Of course, you know you have to wear your aligners; that’s the whole point of Invisalign treatment! What surprises many patients, though, is how easy it is to take aligners out and forget to put them back in. A strong habit must be developed quickly to ensure optimal results within the predicted duration of treatment.
- Oral care is vital to outcome. It isn’t only that you want straighter teeth so you like your smile more; you also want your teeth to be healthy. You want to enjoy fresh breath. This is not guaranteed if you don’t make sure you brush and floss every single day, multiple times a day, during Invisalign treatment. Aligners fit over teeth and can trap bacteria that are left behind after meals. To prevent inflammation and tooth decay, brushing will need to increase.
- What does comfort mean to you? One of the aspects of Invisalign that is promoted is the comfort of aligners versus braces. Aligners are more comfortable than braces. They won’t poke or rub the cheeks. However, there is pressure on teeth, and this can be somewhat uncomfortable.
- Aligners need to be cleaned, but not brushed. Aligners are made of strong plastic. However, brushing them could cause abrasions, or tiny scratches. This provides a resting place for oral bacteria, which cause bad breath, discoloration on the aligner, and a risk for dental problems.
The advantages of Invisalign far outweigh the minor disadvantages like having to curb your coffee habit. Discover what this treatment can do for your smile! Call our Boca Raton office at 561-368-2928.
